You’re Invited – Howard’s Own Dr. Autumn Burnette Works with Comic Book Creators to Help Kids Understand Pediatric Asthma

Meet the Medikidz Comic Characters Live

For children with asthma, understanding their disease can be confusing and complicated but is vital to proper disease management. Pediatric asthma is a significant problem in the United States, effecting 7 million children under the age of 18. Not only can it prevent children from fully participating in activities enjoyed by other kids, it also can disrupt nighttime sleep, resulting in missed school and hospital stays.

In response to demand by parents, physicians and school health officials, the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) – the leading nonprofit organization committed to ending death and suffering due to asthma – Medikidz and Meda Pharmaceuticals collaborated to develop the “Medikidz Explain Asthma” comic book series. This useful tool allows parents and children to engage in an active discussion about asthma in the form of a comic book.

Each comic is reviewed by a leading specialist physician to ensure it presents medically accurate information. Dr. Autumn Burnett, a leading allergist and Assistant Professor of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Howard University reviewed this latest installment in the Medikidz library of comics.

The Medikidz superheroes are experts in health and asthma, and their mission is to teach children about their body and how illness affects it. The comic book format gives parents the opportunity to have a fun, engaging discussion with their children about asthma, the causes and triggers.

To commemorate the release of the first in this three-part series, parent’s in the D.C. area are invited to a free story time launch party on Friday, May 8 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Children’s Playseum, 545 8th Street, Washington, D.C. (Southeast quadrant). Meet the Medikidz characters and listen as special guests will read from the comic book to showcase this educational tool that empowers parents and kids to think about, talk about, and understand asthma in a fun, non-threatening way.

Dr. Burnette will be one of the special guest readers helping to educate parents and children in the D.C. area about the importance of understanding pediatric asthma! There will be snacks, goodie bags and more for a fun filled afternoon. RSVP here for the free, community event.
