Dr. Besrat Mesfin Named Anesthesia Department Chair
WASHINGTON (June 11, 2015) – Dr. Besrat Mesfin has been named permanent chair of the Department of Anesthesia at Howard University Hospital (HUH). He previously served as interim chair of the department and helped streamline operations while maintaining excellence in the clinical practice of anesthesia.
Dr. Mesfin was born in Ethiopia. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Pune, India, and attended medical school at Spartan Health Sciences Medical School in St. Lucia, West Indies. Dr. Mesfin completed his anesthesia residency training at HUH in 2002 and completed fellowship training in cardio-thoracic anesthesia at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He is also trained in the use of Diagnostic TEE intra-operatively during cardiac surgery. Dr. Mesfin is board certified in anesthesia and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologists. He is licensed to practice medicine in Maryland and Washington, DC, and has been with the faculty in the Department of Anesthesia at Howard University since 2004.
Dr. Mesfin began his career as attending anesthesiologist at Washington Hospital Center. He returned to HUH as assistant professor and attending anesthesiologist to re-establish cardiac anesthesia and streamline the efficiency of the management of cardiac patients. He also practices general anesthesia and regional anesthesia.
