Dear Applicant,
We are pleased that you are considering Howard University Hospital (HUH) for your postgraduate training. As you have been invited to interview with us, we wish to take this time to briefly outline the eligibility requirements and benefits of postgraduate training at HUH.

Resident Eligibility

Below are listed the respective requirements, by discipline, for prospective residents:

Medical Residents/ Fellows
A candidate must:

  • be a graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or
  • be a graduate of a college or osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or
  • be a graduate of a medical school outside the United States and Canada who meets one of the following qualifications –
  • has received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or
  • has a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction or
  • has completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by a LCME-accredited medical school;
  • have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and CS or COMLEX Step 1 and Step 2, as applicable and,
  • be able meet regulations of the District of Columbia Board of Medicine regarding either medical training licensure or regular licensure. 

Dental/ Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residents
A candidate must:

  • possess a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school;
  • have passed Part I of the National Board Examination and taken Part II for the General Dentistry residency or
  • have passed Part I and Part II of the National Board Examination for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency; and,
  • be able to meet District of Columbia regulations regarding licensure.

Podiatry Residents
A candidate must:

  • graduated from College of Podiatric Medicine accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education;
  • have successfully passed NBPME Parts I and II (those scores must continue to be valid);   and,
  • be able to meet District of Columbia regulations regarding licensure.

Pharmacy Residents
A candidate must:

  • meet all requirements for acceptance as specified by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists;
  • have been awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a pharmacy school accredited by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education;
  • have passed the NAPLEX or MPJE; and,
  • be able to meet the District of Columbia regulations regarding pharmacist licensure.

Requirements for all residents: Prior to beginning your residency, verification of your graduation will be obtained from the school where you matriculated.  You will be required to undergo a background check, pre-employment drug screen and a physical examination. You will also be required to have a social security number prior to beginning employment.  If applicable, you must also hold a valid visa and current ECFMG certificate.

Salary for House Staff - FY 2013-2014

  • PGY 1 - $48,758
  • PGY 2 - $49,980
  • PGY 3 - $52,080

  • PGY 6 - $60,224
  • PGY 7 - $63,010

Additional benefits include the following:

  • Reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a DC license if and when required to continue training (after five (5) years or on completion of a postgraduate clinical training program or whichever comes first).  Please note that regardless of your year of training, you must obtain a license to practice in the District of Columbia prior to beginning residency if you currently have a license in another state,   
  • Reimbursement for approved expenses incurred in connection with oral or poster presentation at local, national or international meetings, and    
  • Financial support for specialty board review course during final year of training up to $1000
