How do I access the library homepage?
There are two ways to gain access:

  • Link from Howard University's home page at http://www.howard.edu, then click on Library System and click on Health Science or directly at
  • http://www.hsl.howard.edu

How do I find the online catalog (STERLING)? This catalog represents the holdings of seven campus libraries including LSHSL.
From Howard University homepage click on Library Systems, then click the STERLING link. From the Health Sciences Library homepage, click on STERLING.

How do I search Sterling, the online catalog?
You can search Sterling (online catalog) by subject, title, keywords and/or author for books or other materials.

How do I access the electronic databases?
Electronic databases can be accessed from the Library System homepage. Click on Electronic Databases. Select Medicine as the category. This will bring up a list of the Howard University Health Sciences databases with brief summaries of each database. These databases can also be accessed from the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library homepage.

How do I search the databases?
After selecting the database, you can search by keyword, subject, title and/or author for articles. You will retrieve a citation, abstract or full text article.

Can I access the databases remotely?
Yes, you can access databases from off-campus after obtaining a username and password authentication from ISAS. You may contact their Help Desk at 202-806-2020 for your username and password.

How do I find something on reserve?
From the Library System homepage, you can search the Reserve section by Instructor's name, course number, or course title for materials placed on reserve by faculty. Reserve items are kept behind the Reference Desk on the first floor.
