First, please review the information on the website. However, we are available to take calls (202-806-6279) and to receive visitors on: (All times are Eastern time)
Mondays: 10:30 - 12:00 pm
Thursdays: 2:00 - 3:30 pm
Fridays: 2:00 - 3:30 pm
The Admissions Office hosts a FIRST FRIDAY OPEN HOUSE on the first Friday of each month (except holidays). A question & answer session starts promptly at noon. A tour of the medical will begin about 12:45. No need to RSVP.
Unscheduled visits to the Admissions office are not encouraged.
How do I get a secondary application?
The HUCM Admissions office will receive notification from AMCAS when your application has been verified. Shortly after, all applicants will receive an email titled “FROM HOWARD U COLLEGE OF MEDICINE—VERIFICATION OF AMCAS APPLICATION". The first Invitation to complete the HUCM secondary will be mailed on or about August 14; these emails will continue to be sent upon applicant verification by AMCAS until January 1. Acknowledgement of receipt of your secondary will be received about one month after receipt.
The first emails will be sent on August 15 and emails will continue to be sent until January 1. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your secondary via email within three weeks of submission.
When can I expect to get an interview?
You must be interviewed to be accepted to the College of Medicine. However, we cannot interview every applicant. Applicants selected for interviews will receive invitations to interview via email. Interviews will take place between late September and late April. Please do not call to request an interview.
Do you take AMCAS fee waivers?
No, Howard University does not accept fee waivers. However, we work to keep our secondary applications affordable ($75.00).
How long will it be until I hear if I will get an interview?
We will be reviewing applications from August until mid-March. If you are chosen for an interview, you will receive an email invitation within three weeks of the suggested interview dates. You will choose the date best for you.
Should I send transcripts?
No. Please do not send transcripts unless requested. They will not be reviewed and will not be acknowledged.
What about letters of recommendation?
All recommendations must be submitted to AMCAS. See: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcasletters.htm. We will require either:
What are my chances of getting an interview?
- A health professions committee letter of evaluation (composite letter), or
- A letter packet from your college/university which includes at least two letters written by science faculty (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) who taught you and gave you a grade, or
- Two (2) to four (4) individual letters of recommendation, which MUST include at least two (2) letters written by science faculty (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) who taught you and gave you a grade.
Entry into medical school is very competitive. We receive close to 6,500 applications each year. To be considered for an interview, you must: (1) have a science GPA of 3.0 or above, (2) have an MCAT score of 22 or (24 for BS/MD students) and (3) have a history of work/volunteer experience with underserved populations.
