Financial Aid Application Procedures
- Complete all items of the Howard University College of Medicine Application for Student Financial Assistance and return it to the Financial Aid Office, College of Medicine, by March 15. Accepted students should submit this application as soon as possible after acceptance if admitted after the March 15 deadline. Applicant and applicant's spouse must sign this application. Parents' signatures are also required.

- Complete all items on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and submit it so that it will be received by the processing center by March 15. Freshman students should submit the FAFSA as soon as possible after acceptance, if accepted after March 15 and if you have not previously filed. Applicants may file a FAFSA while awaiting a decision on their application. Applicant, applicant's spouse, and parents should complete and sign the FAFSA regardless of the student's dependency status. Lack of parental information may disqualify you from receiving some scholarships and low-interest loans. Therefore, it is recommended that you complete all sections of the FAFSA, including those sections for or about your parents. Please make sure that data reported on the FAFSA and on tax forms are the same. Pay careful attention to the reporting of untaxed income. Please answer the question regarding federal school code, school name, and school address as follows: Code 001448, Howard University, 2400 Sixth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20059. Note: Men 18 and over who have already registered with Selective Service should not request to be registered again on the FAFSA.
- Students may use the paper version of the FAFSA but are strongly encouraged to apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. When you file your FAFSA electronically, you will need a Personal Identification Number or PIN. Students can request a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. When requesting a PIN, you may provide an e-mail address where you would like your PIN to be sent. If you provide an e-mail address, you should receive a PIN within 3 days. If you do not provide an e-mail address, your PIN will be mailed to you within 7-10 days. If completing the paper FAFSA, use a pen with black ink.
- A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to you by the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid Processing Center after the FAFSA has been processed. If you do not receive a SAR within four weeks or if you need a copy, request a duplicate copy by calling 800-433-3243 or check online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
- The SAR will summarize data reported on the FAFSA. Review the SAR for accuracy. In order to make changes to your Student Aid Report, you must either make a correction on the paper SAR and mail it back to the address provided or, if you have a PIN number, use that PIN number to access your SAR report online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Once on the site, go to the “Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA” link. If you have already made corrections to your SAR on the web and have a confirmation number, but determine that you need to make additional corrections, you must wait until your revised application is processed. It is recommended that you wait until you receive your revised SAR in the mail in order to avoid making multiple corrections that can delay the processing of your FAFSA and increase your chance of being selected for a review process called verification.
- Respond immediately to requests for additional information regarding your application.
- When you receive your financial aid award letter, please return a signed copy only if you do not accept any of the aid listed. If you wish to be considered for additional aid or for sources of aid not recommended on your award letter, a written request must be submitted to the College of Medicine’s Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office reserves the right to review and adjust award recommendations at any time due to changes in a student's financial status, enrollment status, or academic standing.
- All eligible students will be considered for the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. Do not submit a Federal Stafford Loan application. No loan application is needed for a Federal Direct Loan. Your eligibility will be determined by the Financial Aid Office based on your FAFSA information and on documents that may be requested from you. Medical students determined to be eligible for the Federal Direct Student Loan Program will be recommended for an amount up to $40,500 ($47,167 if a third-year student), including the maximum amount of Subsidized Direct Student Loan for which eligibility can be determined. The Direct Student Loan Program enables eligible students to borrow from and repay student loans to the U.S. Department of Education instead of to a bank or other lending institution.
- Per federal government regulations, some FAFSA filers will be selected for a review process called verification. Students affected will be asked to complete the independent verification worksheet and submit verification of income for the previous tax year (i.e., 1040EZ, 1040A, 1040, W-2 forms).
- When notified by the Federal Student Aid Processing Center. permanent residents must submit a legible copy of both sides of their alien registration card to the Financial Aid Office, College of Medicine. U.S. citizens born outside the United States must provide documentation of their citizenship status, such as a copy of a passport or original certificate of naturalization.
- Medical students interested in the Army, Navy, or Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program, or the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program, should contact these programs directly for application information. These programs have early deadlines.
- Primary care loans (PCL) will only be recommended for medical students who meet eligibility criteria and who are willing to contractually commit themselves to careers in primary care. Please contact the College of Medicine's Financial Aid Office if interested. Parental data is required on the FAFSA and on the College of Medicine's Financial Aid Application to determine eligibility.
- Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) and Loans for Disadvantaged Students (LDS) will only be awarded to medical students who met eligibility criteria. If you wish to be considered for these programs, please indicate why you believe you are disadvantaged in Section D of the College of Medicine’s Financial Aid Application. Parental data is required on the FAFSA and on the College of Medicine's Financial Aid Application to determine eligibility.
- Conditional permanent residents are ineligible for Primary Care Loans (PCL) and Loans for Disadvantaged Students (LDS). Conditional permanent residents are also ineligible for the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program.
- Students applying to the College of Medicine for financial aid should await an award letter before applying for a private student loan. The award letter will provide the amount of remaining loan eligibility, if any, which may be applied for through these private loan programs.
- Students applying to the College of Medicine for financial aid should await an award letter before applying for GradPLUS. The award letter will provide the amount of remaining loan eligibility, if any, which may be applied for through this new loan program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Students anticipating the need to apply for private student loan programs should obtain and review a copy of their credit report. You may obtain a free credit report by going to www.annualcreditreport.com. Credit reports can also be obtained from one of the three major credit bureaus: (1) Experian (1-888-397-3742/ http://www.experian.com); (2) TransUnion (1-800-888-4213/ http://www.transunion.com); and (3) Equifax (800-685-1111/ http://www.equifax.com)
Generally, you must have "clean" or "good" credit to receive these private loans. Students with numerous late payments, defaults, and judgments reflected on their credit report will have a difficult time obtaining financial aid from private student loan programs. Please note that Federal Direct Loans, Primary Care Loans, and Loans for Disadvantaged Students are not credit-based.
- It is very important that you keep complete records of all aid received. Maintain records of all educational debts together with the terms of each loan, such as the interest rate, deferment provisions, and repayment options. Retain a copy of each promissory note signed.
- Do not hesitate to ask questions regarding your financial aid. Remember, mistakes made in applying for financial aid can be costly and can have long-term implications.
- Complete all applications completely, accurately, truthfully, and legibly. Read and follow instructions carefully. Common errors include:
- leaving spaces blank instead of writing or typing "none" or "not applicable" or by writing or typing in the number "0".
- providing the wrong loan period dates, when requested. Make sure you know the correct loan period dates. If you do not know or are unsure, contact the Financial Aid Office, College of Medicine.
- omitting zip codes from addresses. If you do not know a zip code, look it up in a zip code directory or go to http://www.usps.com.
- not providing telephone numbers when requested.
- not providing parental income information. Lack of parental information, even if independent, may disqualify you from receiving some forms of financial aid.
- not providing references when requested. Sometimes applications or promissory notes will ask for specific types of references such as a relative not living in the household. Make sure you supply the precise information requested.
- not initialing changes, cross-outs, or write-overs on applications.
- not signing and dating applications and all copies of promissory notes.
- not using a ball point pen when completing multi-part paper applications and not pressing hard enough so that all copies of applications are legible.
- providing conflicting data. Discrepancies between what is reported on income tax forms, the FAFSA, and Howard University application documents can lead to delays in aid processing.
