Degree Programs 

The four-year curriculum consists of two separate phases. The Lower Division (years 1 & 2) is designed to provide general educational requirements which set the foundation for the Upper Division. Students who successfully complete the required semester hours of prescribed Lower Division course work, and earn a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale will be eligible to progress to the Upper Division.

The Upper Division (years 3 & 4) of the program constitutes required semester hours of specialized instruction in the theory of clinical laboratory science, concurrent with laboratory experiences in student laboratories and in affiliated hospitals.

Upon successful completion of the required semester hours of course work and clinical experiences, students are awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) examination to be credentialed as a Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP).

Therefore, the mission of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science at Howard University is to educate highly skilled and proficient laboratory scientists committed to providing quality health care. Special emphasis is placed on developing and empowering promising African-American students.


Clinical Affiliation Sites for Degree and Certificate Programs

Howard University Hospital (HUH) and Dimensions Healthcare System (DHS) presently serves as clinical teaching sites for the program. HUH and DHS facilities are equipped with state of the art instruments and is staffed with highly competent professionals who conduct the most current diagnostic procedures. In the senior year, students refine their skills and gain actual work experience, under close supervision, in all areas of the clinical laboratory.


Clinical Practicum Student Requirement

  1. Academic Requirements: minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and successful completion of all clinical courses.
  2. Background Check & Drug Screen: required by clinical affiliates.  
  3. Health Clearance: Includes recent physical examination and up-to-date immunization records.
  4. HIPAA Training and Certification

Statement on Background Check & Drug Screen

Please be advised that all students accepted into the Clinical Laboratory Science bachelor’s degree program will be required to complete a background check and drug screen in order to participate in any clinical and/or fieldwork experiences. The background check is conducted by an outside agency and will be required as part of the clinical clearance completed prior to starting rotation at a clinical affiliate.
